We barely got to see anything at E3, and what they were demoing was a tower defense-esque multiplayer mode. It seemed to have all the charm that Insomniac Games is known for, but you could never be certain with the amount of hype Microsoft was putting behind it. Thankfully, the Burbank-studio delivered as Sunset Overdrive is an enthralling, over the top shooter that messes Jet Set Radio with Crackdown into one neat package. With fourth wall breaking dialogue, one of the most colorful open worlds to be found, and a creative arsenal at your disposal, Sunset Overdrive is Xbox One’s prized jewel.

It looks like Bungie is also playing with the idea of setting up a more regular competitive scene. The most competitive Destiny game modes have been the Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris, which are both timed events. While this allows for an almost heightened sense of competitiveness during these times, it also sort of makes the down time less interesting, like it has smaller stakes. The Beta has two modes -- one called Quickplay, and one called Competitive. While it's not yet prevalent now how this will affect things, it sounds similar to Overwatch's system. It could mean that Destiny 2 will also have seasons, where you're ranked based on performance, which would be a great addition to the Crucible.

Curse of Osiris does include two new strikes, but both are pulled directly from the campaign with no changes. Crucible doesn’t fare much better with only two new maps on Xbox One and PC, and three on PS4. Unfortunately, as of publication, Crucible is wholly broken thanks to the Prometheus Lens, a new trace rifle that is completely unbalanced. Bungie says they’re working on a fix, but a solution has yet to materialize nearly a week after launch.

For all that can be said about Curse of Osiris’ disappointing content, it can’t be denied that Mercury is a beautiful place to visit. The Vex architecture that litters the landscape is as fascinating to take in as ever, and the brief glimpses at Mercury before its transformation are astounding. If only we had more space and time to play around in these fascinating playgrounds.

That's Protheon's big mechanic. Once you get him down to a certain damage point, he drops out the floor beneath you and lands you in a new arena. He does this three times throughout the fight. The difficult part about Protheon is that he plays floor's lava with you. When he gets pissed enough, he'll slam his fist on the ground and burn the entirety of the floor, which forces you to jump up on some small platforms. All this does, however, is put you in the line of sight of Protheon, who has two different weapons with which to take you down. It's a tough fight, but it's interesting and different, and that's what we want. I will say, however, that the rest of the strike is pretty mundane. Save for the couple of interesting set pieces I mentioned earlier, it's kind of simple. It doesn't have many interesting mechanics, but it is short, so running it over and over as you grind will at least be quick. So again, if all of the strikes in Destiny 2 are short and simple but also take you through a new and interesting setting with a neat boss at the end, then sign me up for more.

What is surprising is the antagonist, Gaul. Presented in trailers as a hulking brute, Gaul appeared to be a walking cliché. The end product is the complete opposite with Gaul having much more depth than anticipated. Gaul doesn’t get the amount of screen time he deserves, which is disappointing considering he’s the best part of the story.

Destiny 2 is good at two things: shooting aliens in the face and doing that same thing with friends. Destiny 2 screwed the pooch on players as it's not only is on three platforms, but those three platforms can totally interact… oh wait, no they can’t. Destiny 2’s lack of cross-play is frustrating for the obvious reasons. Being able to play with friends in an online space is one of the many reasons people play online games and one of the biggest reasons people play Destiny 2. Having Guardians on PS4, Xbox One and PC is great as it means a wider audience, but it sucks when Guardians can’t play with their friends over on either of the other platforms. Much like Kotaku discussed in their latest Splitscreen podcast , this is a great way to tear people apart. Instead of enjoying the raid with all my friends, now I get to hear about how my friends did this without me over on Xbox or PC, or vice-versa, and it doesn’t feel good.

Unfortunately, most of the rest of the content Curse of Osiris provides isn’t top quality. Mercury doesn’t offer the space or sense of wonder other areas provide to make it a worthwhile social space or area to explore. The Lighthouse, the new social space, is way smaller than it was in the original Destiny, and it only contains one vendor to interact with. Meanwhile, queenbreaker Catalyst 2025 the open area of Mercury is just a tiny circle, so tiny in fact that Sparrows are disabled to give the illusion it's bigger than it really is. On Mercury, you’ll find one public event, three adventures, and one Lost Sector. For a planet that has been teased since the initial release of Destiny, it’s appearance in Destiny 2 is underwhelming.
