The Lack Of Minecraft Exemplifies All That Is Wrong With The Wii U

What do I mean by that? In game development terms, a "vertical slice," is a gameplay segment of finished or near-finished quality that showcases all the planned features of a game to potential investors. At the start of a project, these are a massive sink for time and effort, since they essentially involve doing all the hard parts of finishing a game to complete one 10-minute section. Generally, they’re seen as a bad practice. However, toward the end of development, it’s a lot easier to pull assets together for a vertical slice. Of course, if you’re shopping your game around to publishers at that stage, you’re probably in a lot of trouble, but a standalone "vertical slice" can also serve as a strong alternative to a traditional demo.

I’m not going to argue that every game should sell itself vertical slice demos. There’s obviously a lot of cost involved in giving away a standalone product, and not every game lends itself to this sort of distillation. However, both Dead Rising and The Stanley Parable went the extra mile with their demos and garnered excellent sales. The same seems to be holding true of Bravely Default. Developers capable of building a short standalone scenario should definitely consider it when it comes time to market their games.

Set on a submarine deep underwater, We Need To Go Deeper allows for up to four-player co-op and forces players to deal with unusual and often terrifying sea creatures. It's one of the more challenging survival games on the market in that respect, but, for those looking to test both themselves and, most likely, their patience with their fellow players, We Need To Go Deeper is definitely the game for t

Slay the Spire mixes things up in a refreshing way by combining the dungeon crawler genre with tabletop card game elements, with combat solely using this card-based system. Players can customize their decks before they head into the procedurally-generated dungeon levels of the Sp

This game becomes quite engaging with friends once everyone gets a hang of how the game is played. Each session of Project Zomboid is rife with danger and thrills, with players ruing the loss of their partners in-game when the going gets tough... which it does. A

The episode relies prettily on QTE (Quick Time Events) and gives you something next to decision making to worry about. While a lot of Enter The Gungeon Roguelike QTE are really to avoid taking damage, some are just used for the sake of being there, like to build things, but they also add to your situation and count as something else to watch out for. You are given a set of ten hearts to have throughout the episode (and most likely throughout the series) and damage gets taken away every time you are either attacked by an enemy or fail to do a QTE. The QTE also acts as its own decision as some events can change how a person sees you. It isn't as effective as a regular decision, but something like which group of people you want to run with or how long it takes you to do something might have a much more of an impact in the future.

Yet Nintendo ignores it, just as they have ignored pleas from their own fans regarding everything from addressing many of the issues already noted, to making their own historically great back catalog more readily available. Yes they've done things like release Earthbound on the Wii U, but only after years and years of remaining silent on the subject while fans begged and pleaded for even an acknowledgment of the damn thing.

The real issue with Nintendo that the lack of a Wii U version of Minecraft best summarizes, though, is their general stubbornness and seeming inability to provide the most obvious things that their fans want. Minecraft has sold over 30 million units to date. Most recently it sold over one million units on the PS3, despite the fact it can be run by most new millennium computers, and has been available for the 360 for some time. It's a game that reaches across generations, and has become a bestseller on every platform its touches.

While not the deepest farming sim or action RPG on the market, Rune Factory 4 is polished, accessible, and charming. Like Minecraft Dungeons , it is a good entry-level option for people looking to dip their toes in dungeon crawlers (and also farming si

The story also deserves notice. Minecraft itself might not have as intense of a story, but Telltale was able to grab some of the more important factors of Minecraft and create a lore to follow and better understand what the characters with. Previously, your goal was to mine for enough materials and minerals to make a portal to the End to slay the Ender Dragon. Now, that story doesn't necessarily apply to everyone, because the ones who slayed the Ender Dragon were the members of the Order of the Stone. The members are essentially the people that you would have normally gone to the End with to help you fight the dragon, so it almost makes it seem like you were some kind of legendary hero for being able to do that if you were able to do so in the past. Everyone else in the episode doesn't have that same goal and, funny enough, don't look at all like the villagers that you sometimes wander upon in the original game. The storytelling and characters leave you with enough of an impression that leaves you waiting in anticipation for the next episode. You begin to make connections with your friends and build a relationship with them in the span of one single episode so it leaves you wanting to know what will come next for this party of builders.
